Maharajah Duleep Singh (1838-1893) was the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire, which was based in the Punjab region of present-day India and Pakistan. He ascended to the throne at the tender age of five following the death of his father, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who was a prominent and influential Sikh leader.
Duleep Singh's reign was short-lived and marked by political upheaval. The British East India Company, seeking to extend its control over the Punjab, annexed the region in 1849. As a result, Duleep Singh was deposed and removed from power, effectively bringing an end to Sikh rule in the Punjab.
After his removal from the throne, Duleep Singh was exiled to Britain, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He converted to Christianity and became closely associated with the British royal family. Queen Victoria took an interest in him and even became his godmother. He was also known by his English name, Prince Victor Albert Jay Duleep Singh.
Throughout his life, Duleep Singh had a complex relationship with his heritage and identity. He expressed a desire to reclaim his throne and reestablish Sikh sovereignty in the Punjab. However, his attempts to engage in political activities were often thwarted by the British authorities.
Duleep Singh had a keen interest in collecting and acquired various artifacts and artworks related to his Sikh heritage. He also commissioned paintings and photographs of himself, family members, and significant events from his life.
Despite his attempts to regain his lost kingdom, Duleep Singh lived a somewhat marginalized existence in Britain. He faced financial difficulties and struggled with his sense of identity and belonging. He made several visits to India in the hopes of reconnecting with his roots but was unable to return permanently.
Duleep Singh passed away in Paris in 1893 at the age of 55. His legacy remains a subject of fascination and study, particularly regarding the history of the Sikh Empire and the impact of colonial rule in India.
