Front of the brooch has the de Clare family shield of red and yellow chevrons surmounted by an angel. Around the edge of the brooch is a Latin and Welsh bi-lingual motto: +JUVAT INTERGROS ACCEDERE FONTES + NERTH GWLAD EI GWYBODAU. This translates as A nation's strength is in its learning.... the motto of the University of South Wales & Monmouthshire, founded in the early 1880s.
