Born in Fife, a historic county of Scotland located between the Fiord of Tay and the Fiord of Forth on the North Sea coast, he trained at the Paisley School of Art and at South Kensington, winning gold medals at the Royal Academy in 1876 and 1877. He was a founder member of the New English Art Club and associated with the Glasgow Boys.
Known for his genre and allegorical painting executed in a broad style and for his pictures of children and Burns scenes.
