This is a 1904–1905 Russo-Japanese War Medal, awarded to commemorate service during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), a pivotal conflict that established Japan as a rising military power in the early 20th century.
Obverse: The obverse side of the medal prominently features two crossed Japanese flags: the Imperial Chrysanthemum standard on the left and the Japanese national flag (Hinomaru) on the right. Above the flags is the Imperial chrysanthemum crest, representing the emperor and imperial authority. Beneath the crossed flags is a stylized Paulownia leaf, which is another emblem of the Japanese government.
Obverse legend: The bar across the top reads "戰役從軍記章" (Senyaku Jūgun Kishō), which translates to "War Medal for Military Service."
Reverse: The reverse of the medal contains an inscription in Japanese Kanji within a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and honor. The inscription reads "明治三十七八年従軍記章" (Meiji 37-38th Year, Russo-Japanese War Medal), commemorating the years of the conflict (1904-1905).
