This postcard captures a scenic view of Kaiserplatz in Bonn, Germany, featuring the Kaiser-Friedrich-Brunnen (Kaiser Frederick Fountain) at its center.
Kaiserplatz was named in honor of Emperor Frederick III (Kaiser Friedrich III), who ruled for just 99 days in 1888 before his death. The Kaiser-Friedrich-Brunnen, built in the late 19th century, was a testament to Bonn’s urban beautification efforts during the German Empire. Bonn itself is one of Germany’s oldest cities, with Roman origins dating back to the 1st century BC, and later became an important medieval religious and educational center. The Poppelsdorf Palace, constructed in the 18th century as a summer residence for the Prince-Electors of Cologne, later became part of the University of Bonn, a prestigious institution founded in 1818.
The reverse side features a handwritten message in English.
The message suggests military movements, possibly referencing World War I or post-war occupation.
