This postcard features the majestic St. Gereon's Basilica (Gereonskirche) in Cologne, Germany, an architectural masterpiece that reflects both Romanesque and medieval design elements. The postcard highlights the church’s distinctive decagonal dome, one of the largest of its kind in the Western world, and the twin towers that rise gracefully above the surrounding buildings, embodying Cologne’s rich religious and architectural history.
St. Gereon’s Basilica, originally founded as a 4th-century Roman martyr shrine, was later transformed into a church dedicated to Saint Gereon, a Roman soldier and Christian martyr. The current structure dates back to the 11th–13th centuries, making it one of the twelve Romanesque churches of Cologne. Its unique design, combining Roman foundations with Gothic enhancements, showcases the city’s layered past, from Roman Cologne (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium) to its medieval prominence.
The reverse side is blank, with multilingual inscriptions: "Postkarte – Weltpostverein / Carte postale / Union postale universelle"
