This postcard features a serene view of Hohenfelder Bucht in Hamburg, Germany, showcasing a large gathering of elegant swans both on the water and along the shoreline.
In fact, Hamburg holds a unique historical connection with swans. Since the 17th century, the city has appointed an official “Swan Father” (Schwanenvater) responsible for the welfare of these graceful birds. A law dating back to 1664 declares the protection of Hamburg’s swans, symbolizing the city’s freedom and prosperity. Each winter, the swans are carefully relocated from the frozen Alster lakes to warmer areas, a practice that continues to this day.
